Former Chief Justice, Dr. Shirani Bandaranayaka was acquitted and released by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court, from the cases filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) concerning the non-declaration of her assets and liabilities for a period of three years.

The Court on February 19 ordered such following the CIABOC’s decision to withdraw the charge sheet and informing the Court that the Commission was no longer willing to proceed with the three cases. Senior State Counsel, Dilan Rathnayake, appeared for the Commission. The defence had argued throughout that the charge was a politically motivated one.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya also lifted the ban imposed on Dr. Bandaranayaka by way of a restraining order in relation to overseas travel and ordered the release of her passport which was placed in Court custody.

Dr. Bandaranayake was accused of not declaring her assets and liabilities for the period of 2010 to 2012 when she was the 43rd Chief Justice of the country.
