Vidyartha College Kandy, who commenced cricket in 1952, has reached great heights in the sport with limited facilities. They have produced several top cricketers and some of their products have done their Alma Mater proud by excelling in cricket at school, club and district level. Vidyartha College is a school which is better known in the rugby circles. This season the school is contesting the Division II tournament.
It has produced some top class cricketers in the likes of T.B. Uduwerella, Z.M. Zubair, Z.M. Anwer, Z.M. Zarook (all brothers), T.B. Wijesinghe, George Jayasena, G.B.S. Diyawa, Sunil Serasinghe, G.D. Ariyarathne, L.B. Aluwihare, Russell Aluwihare, L. Dias, Sunil Munasinghe, N. Eramudugolla, R.M. Lafir, C.K. Gajanayake, S.M. Ramanayake, Nimal Malagamuwa, Athula Manchanayake, Anil Jayasinhge, Sanjan Boruppe, Kodikara brothers Thushara, Chaminda, and Chamara, Tyrone Fernando, Chaminda Ariyadasa, Manoj Chamindalal, Kingsley Jagoda, Nalin Kumara, Dhammika Tilakarathne, Chaminda Jayamanne, Sumedha Perera, Kumara Dodangoda and Niroshan Balasooriya.
This year the side is coached by one of their products, Sanjaya de Silva, who played for Vidyartha College from junior level and was in the senior side form 1999 to 2002. During his playing days he was a top class right arm off spinner and bagged many wickets. He also represented Rio Cricket Club Ambalangoda, Kandy Cricket Club and Kandy Youth Sports Club. He also had coaching stints at Dharmaraja College and Trinity College.
According to Sanjaya the school has some top cricketers and need to be guided in the correct manner. This season they have played against Debarawewa National School Tissamaharama and Carey College and both were drawn. They also played against Kingwood College, St. Anne’s College Kurunegala and Dewananda College Ambalangoda during the third term in 2015. In the first term matches this season they played against Dharmaloka Vidyalaya Kelaniya, Pangnananda MV, Isipathana College, Thurstan College, Kegalu Vidyalaya, Sri Sumangala College Panadura, St. Thomas College Matale, Royal College Panadura and St. John’s College Jaffna. They have matches lined up against Kalutara Vidyalaya and St. Thomas’ College Matara. Due to wet weather and the unavailability of grounds, fixtures against Dharmaraja College, St. Anthony’s College Katugastota, Maliyadewa College and Nalanda College Colombo did not take place. Their last and most looked forward to match is against St. Sylvester’s College (big match) to be followed by the one day and a T/20 match.
Leading the team this season is Namal Perera, who is a third year player, who has a good knowledge of the game. He is a right hand batsman and bowls right arm medium pace. He is rated as a fine all-rounder. He scored heavily last season.
The vice captain of the side is Tharindu Dissanayake who too is a third year player. He is a fine left hand batsman with an array of strokes and bowls right arm medium pace.
