The Cabinet last week approved a proposal to introduce transportation along the Colombo Canal Network as a tourism promotion.
The proposal was presented in Parliament by Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka.
The Colombo Canal Network, which is maintained by the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation, will be accordingly developed for transportation of passengers and goods.
The objective of this exercise would be to promote the tourism industry in the country while providing a solution for the problem of traffic which is worsening by the day.
The project will entail the introduction of a transportation scheme over canals, water-based recreational activities using boats and a commercial activities such as floating markets.
