The Department of Prisons has commenced an investigation into a letter alleged to have been written by General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) Ven. Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thera, presently in remand for contempt of court.

Commissioner of Prisons (Operations/Intelligence and Security), H.M.T.N. Upuldeniya explained that the monk had in a statement given to intelligence officials denied writing and sending such a letter.  In the said letter presently doing the rounds in the press and media,

Ven. Gnanasara Thera has requested a meeting with MPs and Ministers to discuss the role of monks and information and details pertaining to religious fundamentalism and an invasion of the country by the Muslims.

Chief Executive Officer of the BBS, Dr. Dilanthe Withanage has no clear idea how that such a letter was received by media, however, he added “Hamuruwo knew that he would be arrested and sent for remand for 14 days. He had written several letters and I suspect this could be one of such letters.”
