The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein arrived in the country yesterday on a four-day official visit.
The High Commissioner was scheduled to meet with several leader of the Government including President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and External Affairs Minister Mangala Samaraweera. He is also expected to call upon the Leader of Opposition R. Sampanthan during his visit.
In addition, he would also meet civil society representatives, the tri-service chiefs, and members of the diplomatic community in Colombo. The High Commissioner is also expected to visit Jaffna and Trincomalee where he is expected to meet with the governors and chief ministers of the respective provinces.
The discussions is expected to include measures to strengthen, promote and protect human rights, as well as steps being taken to implement the provisions of Resolution 30/1 titled ‘Promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka’ which was adopted by the Human Rights Council in October last year with the co-sponsorship of Sri Lanka.
