Sri Lanka Under-19 team losing to Pakistan by 23 runs enabled the latter to finish on top of Group B in the ongoing Youth World Cup in Bangladesh. The young ‘Lions’ finished runners up to Pakistan in the same Group. Pakistan will now take on West Indies in the quarter-finals while Sri Lanka will meet England in the other Quarter final.
Sent in to bat, Pakistan made slow progress at first with wickers falling regularly.
All-rounder Hasan Mohsin helped Pakistan to a competitive total by making 86 with eight fours and a six. Pakistan’s innings folded in the penultimate over for 212.
Hasan Mohsin then took the ball and dismissed both Sri Lankan openers cheaply.
Sri Lanka were in deep trouble tottering at 63 for 4 wickets. But young 17-year-old left hand batsmen Kamindu Mendis and wicket keeper batsmen Vishad Randika steadied the innings with a brilliant 84-run stand for the fifth wicket. Mendis was holed out in the deep for a magnificent 68 runs off 104 balls inclusive of five hits to the ropes, Randika made a superb 46 off 71 balls.
Damitha kept Sri Lankans hopes alive with an unbeaten 21 off 30 balls, but in the end the Lankan lower order crumbled to leave Sri Lanka with a score of 189.
