Sports play a dominant role at Dharmaraja College apart from academics. The Dharmaraja–Kingswood cricket encounter (Battle of the Maroons) is the oldest cricket encounter in Kandy with an history dating back to 1893.
Dharmaraja is one of the oldest cricket playing schools in the country and will field a formidable side this season. They have played a couple of games and done well under the guidance of coach Senaka Dissanayake. Dharmaraja has a long cricketing history and they have produced some top class players like Arthur Alwis. T.B. Talwatte, T.B. Kehelgamuwa, Sonny Yatawara, Bertie Nilagoda, the Jayasundara brothers Ananda, Daya and Upananda, David Karunaratne, Harold Ranasinghe, D.D. Somapala, D.D. Hemapala, Gamini Gunatilake (Snr.), G.S. Ratnayake, Mahinda Pethiyagoda, Priyantha Weeragoda, Ravi Rajapakse, Geevan Gajaweera, Thilina Tennakoon, Indrajith Bandaranayake, A. Gannoruwa, D.D.P. Alwis, Shanthi Mendis, the Alwis brothers, D. de C and D. de D., T.B. Marasinghe, Chandra de Silva and A.S. Ekanayake.
They have a tremendous task ahead of them and are making a determined effort to maintain their reputation. They suffered a setback when they went down to Trinity College. They began the third term matches in 2015 with fixtures against Dharmasoka College, Dharmapala College, Aloysius College and Zahira College. All these matches ended in draws. They beat St. Benedict’s College.
In the first term (2016) they played their first match against S. Anthony’s College Wattala which was drawn. The next game is against St. Anthony’s College Katugastota and will be played on February 11-12 at Katugastota. They also have matches against Bandaranayake College, Nalanda College, Ananda College, Sri Rahula College Matara, Mahinda College Galle and Royal College.
This season they are led by 5th year player Wenuka Galahitiyawa a fine left hand batsman and a left arm bowler. He won the highest award in cricket “Dagoba”. His deputies are Deshan Gunasinghe, a 5th year coloursman and a steady middle order batsman and another Dagoba winner Ruchira Pupulewatte, who is good in both batting and bowling. And also they have the services of under 18 National youth player Lahiru Samarakoon who is a steady pace bowler.
The squad also comprises Niwantha, Gihan Withara, Ashmitha Rajapakse, Bawantha Udangamuwa, Supun Withanarachhci, Shehan Vitharana, Chaturanga Aludeniya, Kavinda Thillakarathna, N. Hippola, Gayath Hewavitharana, Danushka Bandara, Rulmal Dissanayake, Kasun Gunawardene, Litira Ganegoda, Achithna Rupanayake and Dileepa Bandara.
