Son of MP Mahinda Rajapaksa, Lieutenant of the Navy, Yoshitha Rajapaksa, who has shunned food provided by the prison has been given the choice of obtaining food from outside according to prison procedures, a senior prisons official said.
Rajapaksa presently remanded on suspicion of involvement in money laundering has refused to consume food cooked in the prison.
Commissioner of Prisons (Operations/Intelligence and Security), H.M.T.N. Upuldeniya said that since Rajapaksa was merely a suspect and not a convicted prison inmate, he was allowed the facility of obtaining food for meals from outside.
He had made a request to be allowed to have food brought from outside for consumption and the Department of Prisons has complied with it, he added.
“There is nothing special happening here. Several Ministers have come to see him in the morning today (02),” he remarked.
Rajapaksa and three others including Minister Arjuna Ranatunga’s brother Nishantha Ranatunga were remanded for their involvement with the Carlton Sports Network and are presently being investigated for several offences which fall under the purview of the Penal Code.
