The Inter-University Students’ Federation (IUSF) observed that a total of 1,412 vacancies remained in State Universities for the enrollment of undergraduates.
Convener of the IUSF, Lahiru Weerasekera said that in the University of Sabaragamuwa alone there were 715 seats yet to be filled.
The batches have already started educational activities and therefore there is no point in enrolling students three to four months once the first semester is over, he explained.
Even with all faculties not being there in them, the Universities of Wayamba, Rajarata, Peradeniya, Sri Jayewardenepure along with Sabaragamuwa have vacancies for which enrollments and registrations are yet to take place, he mentioned.
“The Ministry of Higher Education and the University Grants Commission (UGC) informs us that they are continuing to register and enroll students, yet a comprehensive program to achieve this does not seem to be in place. Apart from planning on conducting protest actions at the said Universities soon, we are presently engaged in writing to the UGC and the Deans of the respective Faculties regarding this matter. At a previous meeting between State Minister of Higher Education, Mohan Lal Grero and representatives of Student/Undergraduate Unions of the Universities, he promised to increase enrollment to State Universities by 10%. This has not materialized,” he remarked.
