Penelope Cruz undergoes an unrecognizable transformation for a film called “Ma Ma”, in which she plays a mother battling breast cancer. Cruz shaves her head to play a woman who is struggling to keep her head above the water while dealing with a straying husband, her son, and a breast cancer diagnosis.
“I fell in love with the story of this woman, who is like a goddess, a sage,” Cruz said. “It was very important to me to take risks and at no time did I worry if I looked beautiful, was ugly or very ugly. It is a tribute to all women who face this disease.” ‘Ma Ma’ was released in Spain last year and it will get a worldwide release later in 2016. “It’s the first time I portray a character who’s not a woman and lover, but a mother,” said the 41-year-old actress.
“It’s one of the most complex, beautiful characters I’ve ever been offered, the most difficult.” Cruz has definitely been busy, as her next big project has also been announced, starring as journalist Virginia Vallejo in “Escobar” opposite husband Javier Bardem, who plays the Columbian drug lord Pablo Escobar.
