Sri Lanka’s most outstanding back division rugby player at present Fazil Marija is out with a back injury, but the rate at which he is recovering has given some relief to his club, Kandy SC, which is backing the player to the hilt.
Kandy SC Rugby Chairman Lasantha Wijesuriya told Nation that Marija is okay when inquired about his health. Wijesuriya added that the player was receiving treatment under doctors Wasantha Perera and Australian David Young. The latter is no stranger to Sri Lankan sportsmen and has a history of treating some of the island’s best athletes.
According to Wijesuriya the doctors attending to Marija have asked him to rest for a few weeks. “If there is a necessity for doctors to do an operation on Marija it will be done after the season,” Wijesuriya said.
When contacted Marija said that he had been discharged from hospital and was following doctors’ instructions, which is to rest for 3-4 weeks. Marija said he wished to return to rugby, but would watch how he progresses in recovering. “It is very disappointing to be unavailable for the team because I am the captain,” said Marija who added that Kandy SC has been very helpful to him during this challenging time.
Wijesuriya described Marija’s absence as a ‘big loss’ and said, “It is not easy to replace a player in the calibre of Marija because he has occupied the fly half position for nine long years.”
SLRFU’s Executive Director Rohan Guneratne said that Marija was a complete player and could be rated as the player of the generation. “Replacing such a player is impossible,” said Guneratne.
Marija commenced his rugby at Kingswood College Kandy and later represented Kandy SC and the Sri Lanka national team in both sevens and 15-a-side rugby.
