The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has demanded that the proposed constitutional reforms include devolution of powers to resolve the national question.

The demand was placed by TNA Parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

“The only solution to the national problem could be the devolution of power. We hope the new Constitution will address this issue,” Sumanthiran had told reporters.

He further stated that the need for a new Constitution was felt by all in order to move forward as one country and added that the process will lay the ground for a new arrangement.

The government had presented a resolution in Parliament earlier this month to enact a new Constitution replacing the 1978 Constitution. However, the opposition has stated that the move is unconstitutional.
