Mahanayake Thera of the Malwatte Chapter Most Ven. Tibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Thera has welcomed the Government’s move to Theravada Bhiksu Kathikawatha Bill in Parliament stating that it would strengthen and safeguard Theravada Buddhism.

The Mahanayake Thera in a letter to the Minister of Buddha Sasana and Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said that the move was timely.

The Mahanayake Thera in his letter explained that in the past, kings had assisted in Sangha order in several ways and added that the Kathikawatha Bill had been prepared by respected and erudite Bhikkus, and the government only provided the legal background to the bill.

The Mahanayake Thera noted that the previous government was continuously informed about the need of having such a Bhikksu Kathikawatha. He however pointed out that no action was taken despite continuous requests from the Maha Sanga and civil society, due to various political reasons.
