The launch of the first phase of the ‘Virusara’ privilege card for families of war heroes will be launched at a function today (25).

The launch function will be held at Temple Trees and would presided by President Maithripala Sirisena. The event would also see the participation of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and State Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewardena.

The privilege card, the brainchild of State Minister Wijewardene, for the benefit of families of fallen heroes, those who have disappeared and were disabled.

The ‘Virusara’ card would provide a wide range of benefits in more than 45 state and private sector services. It will also allow priority service especially for differently-abled soldiers.

In its first phase, it is expected that over 300,000 family members of fallen war heroes and those who have been disabled.

In addition, the Defence Ministry will also launch the awarding of 100 scholarships, each worth Rs 50,000, to war-affected children of the North and East today.

The scholarships will be awarded to students from all three communities in the two provinces.
