Sri Lanka’s table tennis players faced trials to be picked for the upcoming SAF Games in India after which five men and five women were picked to represent the country.
This part of the year is hectic for table tennis players with their participation also expected at the Perfect 216 World Team Championships.
Sources said that the players are raring to go to India after the trials helped authorities pick the national teams for the games in India.
The World Team Championships is hosted by Malaysia and will be held from February 28 – March 6 in Kuala Lumpur.
The World Team Championships is a prestigious event and both Sri Lanka’s men’s and women’s teams have been pooled in division 3. The Sri Lankan men’s players have been seeded 70th while the women’s team has been seeded 63rd.
The men’s team for the SAF Game will include Udaya Ranasinghe, Rohan Sirisena, Nirmala Jayasinghe, Chamira Ginige and Prasad Silva. The women’s team comprises Erandi Warusavithana, Ishara Madurangi, Ruwini Kannangara, Hansini Piyumila, Samaththra Fernando. Jothipala Samaraweera will be the coach while Commodore Anil Bowatte of the Sri Lanka Navy will be the manager.
