Navy SC skipper Dhanushka Perera | Kandy SC skipper Fazil Marija

The confrontation between Kandy Sports Club and Sri Lanka Navy in the Dialog ‘A’ Division inter-club League Rugby Tournament at Nittawela in Kandy on Sunday should turn out to be a thriller. The match will kick off at 4:00pm.

The Navy side which suffered an unexpected defeat at the hands of Havelocks SC and Army SC in their first round games returned to their normal pattern of play against CH and FC, Air Force, Police and CR and FC, against whom they registered a stunning 21-20 victory last week. Navy have been training hard during the past few days and are determined to pull off a morale-boosting win. The unbeaten Kandy SC side which registered victories against CH and FC, Air Force, Police, Army, CR and FC and Havelocks, whom they beat 18-8 last week, will have to be at their very best if they have to topple the high riding Navy XV in Nittewela. Going by the two team’s performances so far, a close tussle for supremacy can be expected at Nittawela in Kandy.

The forte of the Navy team has been their power-packed forwards. The Navy ‘eight’ especially Yoshitha Rajapaksa, Roshan Ranasinghe, Sathya Ranathunga, captain Danushka Perera, Matheesha Sarathchandra, Omalka Gunarathna and Sajith Saranga have given a terrific display in the loose. But today brawn and wits will be called to active play when both sides meet. Kandy’s forwards spearheaded by burly Heshan Kalhara ably supported by Soyuru Anthony, Kishore Jehan, DamithDissanayaka, Piyumal Manchanayaka and Gayan Rathnayaka.

In the set scrums the experienced Navy hooker Dulanjana Wijesinghe should get the better of his vis-a-vis Damith Dissanayaka while the line outs should be shared between the Navy duo of Matheesha Sarathchandra and Sajith Saranga and Kandy’s Soyuru Anthony and Gayan Rathnayaka.

With the halves combination of Suranga Pushpakumara and Chanaka Chandimal having clicked in the last few matches the Navy team will hope that Pushpakumara will set his three quarters in motion at every turn as they have two hard running centres in Lee Keegal and Richie Dharmapala in addition to experienced wingers Saliya Handapangoda and Heshan Maduranga who have stood out with their powerful runs down the flank. Full back in Thilina Weerasinghe has displayed his will and skill in often joining the line to form the overlap.
