A 32-year-old woman was killed and four others, including three children, were injured after a car was struck by a train at a level crossing in Kandana this afternoon.

Police Media Unit said the incident had occurred at the level crossing located at Halpe Junction in Kandana. The car had been struck by a train carrying fuel from Katunayake to Kolonnawa.

The car driver’s wife and two male children aged six years and eight months, as well as the driver’s sister and her child, aged nine months, were injured in the incident. They  were admitted to the Ragama hospital, where the driver’s sister succumbed to her injuries. The deceased is a resident of Batagama.

The driver of the car had escaped unhurt. Police said investigations had revealed that the car had entered the level crossing ignoring both the warning bell and the light signals that were in effect at the time giving warning of the approaching train.

Kandana Police are investigating.
