The island-wide strike that was scheduled to be launched tomorrow (Dember 15) by several trade unions has been called off.

The decision to call off the trade union action was taken after Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe made a special statement in Parliament today where he announced several amendments to the government’s budget proposals.

President Maithripala Sirisena has also invited trade union representatives for a special discussion on their issues with the budget on December 16.

Trade unions representing the transport sector, including railway trade unions and Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association (LPBOA) have already announced they have called off tomorrow’s strike, which was to begin after midnight tonight.

However, the Ceylon Bank Employees’ Union has said it will conduct its strike action tomorrow.
