CR and FC produced a superb second half rally to come from behind (7-12) and beat Sri Lanka Police in their Dialog Division 1 Inter-club League Rugby Tournament match by 22 points (3 Tries, 2 Conversions, 1 Penalty) to 12( 2 Tries, 1 Conversion) at Police Park on December 12 (Saturday). The Winners led 14-12 at half time.
The match got off to a good start with both teams engaging in a battle for supremacy. Police drew first blood in the 20th minute of play when their number eight Bilal Hassen scored off a rolling maul. Fly half Reeza Mubarak put over the conversion. Police went in to a 7nil lead.
In the 27th minute of play CR equaled when their scrum half Kavindu De Costa made a fabulous kick into the Police in goal area and CR center Kanchana Ramanayaka came like a flash, collected the lose ball and ran almost 30 metres before diving over for a try under the post. He made the conversion and the score read 7all.
Police scored again in the 38 th minute when their number eight Hassen scored off a rolling maul and the conversion was missed by his brother in law Mubarak. Police took a 12-7 lead.
Just on the stroke of half time following a Ashan De Costa up and under Sashan Mohamad collected and off loaded it to Sasanka Ariyarathna who set the line in motion for full back Rochana Hettiarachchi to form the overlap and touch down near the left corner flag. Ramanayaka made a sensational touchline conversion to increase CR lead and made the score 14-12 before both teams went into half time.
Soon after the break in the 55th of play, off a five metre scrum, CR number eight Arun Kumar crashed through for a superb under the posts. Surprisingly Ramanayaka missed the conversion. CR led 19-12.
CR sealed the match in style when their reliable place kicker Ramanayaka put over a fantastic 35 metre penalty to take the final score read 22 points to 12 in favour of the Red Shirts.
Referee – Dinka Peiris had a horrible day with the whistle.
