A suspect allegedly involved in armed robberies of several banks and jewelry shops was arrested by the Special Crime Investigation Division of the Mirihana Police yesterday.

Police Media Unit said the suspect was taken into custody after a lengthy investigation. Police further said the suspect is believed to have been involved in the armed robbery of a state bank branch in Kahahena on September 10 this year where Rs.2.6 million was stolen as well as an armed robbery of a jewelry shop in Homagama on December 21, 2014, where robbers escaped with Rs.8.3 million in gold jewelry.

Both robberies had been committed after robbers opened fire inside the locations with T56 weapons, according to police. The 45-year-old suspect is a resident of Hingurakgoda. He is due to be produced before the Avissawella Magistrate’s Court today.
