A 32-year-old suspect who was trying to smuggle over 100 credit cards and foreign currency valued at over Rs.1 million was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake last night.
Customs Media Spokesman Leslie Gamini said the suspect was taken into custody with 109 credit cards and 25,770 Dirhams valued at Rs. 1,019,203 concealed in his baggage. He had been trying to smuggle the credit cards and foreign currency to Dubai, according to Customs.
After the conclusion of the Customs inquiry, the foreign currency was forfeited and a penalty of Rs.1 million was imposed on the suspect.
Customs officials have now handed over the suspect and credit cards to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigations.
