Three suspects who escaped after assaulting and robbing two policemen have been taken into custody.

Police Media Unit said two police constables attached to the Athurugiriya Police Station were on duty at a spot along the Kaduwela-Malabe Road last evening when they had stopped a three-wheeler that was driving at high speed.

As the officers moved to inspect the three-wheeler after it had stopped, three occupants had got out of the vehicle and had held the officers at gunpoint using a locally manufactured ‘galkatas’ firearm. They had then proceeded to assault the officers. One officer who had fallen on the road had been kicked in the head. The other officer had been robbed of a gold chain and mobile phone by the suspects who had then fled in the three-wheeler.

However, after being informed of the incident by the injured officers, a team from the Athurugiriya Police had been able to stop the three-wheeler in the Pittugala area and arrest the suspects.

Police were able to recover a galkatas firearm, a live round of 12-bore shotgun ammunition and two kris knives from the suspects’ possession. The suspects have been identified as residents of Homagama and Thambuththegama.

The two injured police officers are receiving treatment at the Homagama Hospital. The suspects are due to be produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court today. Athurugiriya Police are investigating.
