The Coast Conservation Department has requested the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development for soft copies of the supplementary Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the Port City project for online access for the general public.

The Government last week released the supplementary EIA and is now currently available at 11 institutions in order to obtain public input before they are submitted to the relevant ministry next month.

However, the Ministry has only provided the hardcopy of the report, which would mean that people needed to physically travel to these institutions in order to go through its content.

Director General of Department of Coast Conservation Department, Prabarth Chandrakeerthi told Nation that a request had already been sent to the Ministry on this regard. “We are yet to get the approval from the Ministry to upload the report online,” he said.

According to a gazette notification issued on November 30, the document would be available at government institutions including the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment, Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management Department, Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resource, Central Environmental Authority, District Secretariat, Narahenpita, the Divisional Secretariats (Colombo, Thimbirigasyaya, Wattala, the Colombo Municipal Council, Pradeshiya Sabhawa, Wattala, and Regional Office, Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management Department, Negombo.

In addition, the public would have to submit their suggestions by December 30.
