A suspect who tried to collect money from a businessman while posing as a police officer has been arrested by the Kahathuduwa Police.

Police Media Unit said the businessman had been contacted over the phone by an individual claiming to be a police officer attached to the Kahathuduwa Police. The suspect had stated that the police needed Rs.7000 for a function organized by the police station and had requested the businessman to provide the funding.

The businessman had inquired about the matter from the police where he had been told that police were not making any such request.

On instructions from the police, the businessman had arranged to meet the suspect on the pretext of providing him the money. He was taken into custody while accepting the money.

The suspect has been identified as a 48-year-old resident of Polgasovita and he is due to be produced before the Kesbewa Magistrate’s Court today.
