Former DIG, Vass Gunawardena, his son Ravindu Gunawardena, and four other accused have been sentenced to death by the Colombo High Court after being found guilty of murder.

All six accused were found guilty by a three judge bench at a Trial-At-Bar of abducting and murdering businessman Mohammed Shiyam.

Shiyam was abducted and subsequently found murdered in May, 2013.

Former DIG Gunawardena was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the case on June 10. Businessman Shiyam was abducted and murdered in the Dompe area on May 22.

The CID initially on June 06 arrested Sub-Inspector Lakmini Bamunusinghe, attached to the office of the DIG Western Province (North), along with three Police Constables. Upon interrogating the arrested police officers, the CID recorded a statement from DIG Vaas Gunawardena on the same day.

DIG had been arrested over the details which the CID received from one individual known as ‘Chutte’ in Pettah who is known to associate with many high-ranking police officers and engages in other illegal activities.
