President Maithripala Sirisena left for Malta early this morning to participate in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), 2015. Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera and Minister Sagala Rathnayake left early for Malta to participate in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Foreign Ministers’ Conference and the Financial Conference respectively.

President Maithripala Sirisena is the current chairperson of the Commonwealth and he is due to hand over the position of the Chair to the Prime Minister of Malta on Friday, November 27.

The Queen, who missed the CHOGM 2013 in Sri Lanka on medical advice, will be visiting Malta. She is also due to accompany Duke of Edinburgh as the tour is going to be a sensational one for the royal couple. The royal couple had stayed in Malta as newlyweds before the Queen’s accession to the throne. Foreign media reported that the Queen and Duke will be greeted by Malta’s Prime Minister Joseph Muscat at the airport and will then receive a ceremonial welcome, attended by President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, in Valletta.
