Meet the rugby clubs

By Indika Amarasinghe

Havelocks Sports Club, a team that once struggled to field a squad for inter-club rugby tournaments, was back under the spotlight in 2012 thanks to the services of several ex-CR&FC players and the guidance offered by coach, Tulagaese Tawita, affectionately known as Laga in the domestic rugby scene. The result of this composition in rugby was that the Park Club went on to win the coveted league crown under prop forward Terence Henry. With this feat Havies reached the pinnacle in domestic rugby after a lap of almost four decades.

The brainchild behind this famous feat was none other than ex-CR and FC stalwart Asanga Senevirathna, who suddenly took over Havies that year and within the period of three to four months transformed an ordinary bunch of players into a competitive unit, capable of giving a fight to other top clubs such as CR and FC, Navy and Kandy.

Players in the like of Sadun Herath, Diren Warnakulasuriya (son of ex national cricketer Sumithra Warnakulasuriya), Shenal Dias, Dulaj Perera, Jason Melder, Hirantha Perera, Ganuka Dissanayaka, Danushka Ranjan, Anuranga Walpola, Sudarshana Muthutantri, Mithun Hapugoda, Shenal Deelaka, Umesh Madushan and ex Navy/Army skipper Rohitha “Chichi” Rajapakse, Rehan Thiyagaraja, Irfan Meedin, Andrew Benson, Liston Karunarathna, Kanishka Darling, Kevin Dixon and Nishon Perera will turn out for Havelocks SC this season.

There’s speculation that former CR & FC scrum half Rahul De Silva and second row forward six footer Sithum Peiris will most probably wear the pink and chocolate Jersey’s this season.

Sri Lanka winger ex-Peterite Sadun Herath will captain Havelocks SC at the upcoming 2015/16 inter-club league rugby tournament which will be sponsored by Dialog.

While Head coach is Samoan international Tulagaese Tawita ‘Laga’, former Preterite Rajiv Perera will be his assistant. Ex-Havies skipper Kavinda Jayasena will be the Manager of the rugby team this season,

Havies will come out for the first time this season against the formidable Police SC on November 20 (Friday) at 6.30pm under lights at Havelock Park.
