Diplomatic discussions are ongoing between Sri Lanka and the Maldives regarding the arrest of an alleged Sri Lankan sniper in connection with a plot to kill Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
Accordingly, Maldives High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Zahiya Zareer met Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry Secretary Chitranganee Wagiswara yesterday to brief the Sri Lankan government about details of the arrest.
Further discussions are due to be held between Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the Maldives W.A.T. Gunathilaka and the Maldivian government.
However, the Sri Lankan government maintains that there is no evidence to suggest that the 27-year-old Sri Lankan national currently in the custody of Maldivian authorities has ever been associated with the Sri Lankan armed forces.
The Maldives government though, claims there is evidence to suggest that the suspect had undergone specialized training.
The suspect was arrested on October 24. A Maldives Criminal Court has extended his detention in remand custody.
