Delivering a special statement in Parliament today outlining the government’s mid-term economic policies, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe stated that freehold land ownership would be given to about three million people who were without lands.
Speaking further, Wickremesinghe said those who had spent 10 years on rent in state houses would also be granted ownership of those houses.
Wickremesinghe also said the government planned to introduce a new national pension scheme by merging the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and the Employees’ Trust Fund (ETF).
The government would also be removing import taxes on books and sports, he added. The Prime Minister also stated that university students would be provided with loan facilities to purchase laptops.
