Three persons have been taken into police custody in connection with the ‘sale’ of a 29-day old infant in Valachchanai.
Releasing a statement, Police Headquarters stated that investigations had commenced after a tip-off made on November 2 to the 1929 child helpline established by the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA).
The tip-off had revealed information that a woman in Palainagar had sold her 29-day old baby girl for a sum of Rs.20,000.
Investigations initiated by the Valachchanai Police had revealed that the 20-year-old woman had given birth to the girl at the Trincomalee Hospital on October 4. She had given birth after becoming pregnant following an illicit affair. Stating that she was not in a position to take care of the child, the woman, using an intermediary, had then sold the girl to another woman in Valachchanai on October 28 for Rs.20,000.
Accordingly, Valachchanai Police had arrested the two women and the male intermediary on November 3. The suspects were produced before the Valachchanai Magistrate’s Court where they were released on Rs.100,000 personal bonds each. Subject to a court bond, the infant has been temporarily entrusted to care of the woman who had paid money for her. The case is due to be taken up again on November 9. Valachchanai Police are investigating.
