The new prison complex, constructed at a cost of Rs. 272 million, at Pannai in Jaffna will be opened tomorrow; November 01. The new complex which was built on a land in extent of 2.5 acres will accommodate around 1,000 inmates.

The new prison also includes a prison hospital and extra space for inmates. According to the Prisons Department statistics, there are 23 prisons in the country and they can accommodate 12,626 inmates. There are four prisons in Welikada, Mahara, Bogambara and Boosa while 18 remand prisons including Colombo, New Magazine, Jaffna, Anuradhapura, Badulla, Batticaloa, Galle, Matara, Tangalle, Negambo, Trincomalee, Kegalle, Kalutara, Kuruwita, Polonnaruwa, Monaragala, Wariyapola and Vavuniya.

A Training School for Youthful Offenders (TSYO) is situated at Watareka. Meanwhile, the Prisons Department revealed that the current number of prisoners is 18,726.
