Police have arrested three suspects in connection with an incident where a Sri Lankan national employed in Qatar was assaulted and robbed of Rs.106,000 in cash along with a gold chain worth Rs.20,000 and four mobile phones.

Police Media Unit said the victim, who was a resident of Pottuvil, arrived in Sri Lanka from Qatar yesterday and hired a van to take him to Pottuvil from Katunayake. However, he had been drugged by the suspects while near the Oruthota area in Theldeniya and robbed of cash and belongings. Four suspects who had been in the van had assaulted the victim and left him dumped on the side of the road in the area.

However, upon being informed of the crime, Theldeniya Police had been able to track the van down and arrest three of the suspects in the Hunnasgiriya area. The stolen cash and valuables were also recovered from the suspects’ possession. However, one suspect had managed to escape.

The arrested suspects, aged 26, 30 and 35 years, are residents of Batticaloa and Kaththankudi. They are due to be produced before the Theldeniya Magistrate’s Court today. The victim is still being treated at the Theldeniya Hospital. Further investigations are ongoing.
