Secretary of the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) and former Eastern Provincial Councilor P. Prashanthan was arrested this morning by the Kaththankudi police in connection with a double murder that took place in 2008.

According to Police Media Unit, the suspect had been taken into custody in connection with an incident that took place on December 13, 2008 at Ariyampathi, where two persons were shot dead with a T56 weapon. Another woman had sustained serious injuries. Police had been unable to identify any of the assailants up until now.

However, on October 21, a sister of one of the deceased had lodged a complaint with the Kaththankudi Police stating that she had witnessed the crime. She had also provided names of several of the alleged assailants, one of whom was the TMVP Secretary.

Accordingly, the suspect was arrested this morning. Investigations are underway to arrest several others said to have been involved in the murders. The suspect is due to be produced before the Batticaloa Magistrate today, police further said.
