CID arrests Wimal Weerawansa
Leader of the National Freedom Front (NFF), Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Police Media Unit confirmed.
Weerawansa was taken into custody for using an invalid passport. Earlier, the MP had been stopped at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) while trying to travel overseas using the passport.
Weerawansa is due to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate later today.
The former minister had been stopped by the officials on the grounds that his passport was a suspended one. He had informed the CID officials that he lost his passport and obtained a new one after making a complaint with police. However, this morning, he had come to the airport with his old passport.
Former Minister who was handed over to the CID had been later questioned. Meanwhile, MP Dinesh Gunawardene has raised the issue in Parliament as a violation of Parliamentary privileges and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has assured the House to attend the issue soon. NFF Media Spokesman Mohammed Muzammil who was on the way to the scene said “No big issue and he will be released soon as the Prime Minister has given instructions to the officials.”
Interestingly, Wimal Weerawansa’s wife Shashi Weerawansa was arrested by the CID in February this year on charges of submitting forged documents to obtain a diplomatic passport.
