An influential UN drug policy body is about to recommend all drugs be legalized all over the world, according to Sir Richard Branson. The Virgin boss says the UN Office on Drugs and Crime is about to change policy, advising governments across the globe to decriminalize possession and use of drugs.
In a post on his blog, Branson said it was a “refreshing shift that could go a long way to finally end the needless criminalization of millions of drug users around the world.”
Branson says the change in policy has been shared with him ahead of the official announcement, and that it “unequivocally” states that criminalization is harmful.
He added: “My colleagues on the Global Commission on Frug Policy and I could not be more delighted…. Together with countless other tireless advocates, I’ve for years argued that we should treat drug use as a health issue, not as a crime. While the vast majority of recreational drug users never experience any problems, people who struggle with drug addiction deserve access to treatment, not a prison cell.” (www.mirror.co.uk)
