‘An Evening of Wind Music’ under the baton of a Japanese conductor, Ms. Keiko Kobayashi, was held at the St. Anthony’s College Auditorium, Katugastota, Kandy, on October 3(Saturday), 2015. The concert was organized by the Embassy of Japan in partnership with the Colombo Wind Orchestra. Ms. Asako Okai, Chargé d’ affaires of the Embassy was present.
This was the fourth concert of its kind as it had been previously held in Jaffna in 2012, Batticaloa in 2013 and Galle in 2014, under the consistent theme of ‘National Reconciliation’ of Sri Lanka. The repertoire of music included ‘Hands Across the Sea’ by John Philip Sousa, ‘Western One-Step” by Robert Russell, ‘Take the A train’ by Billy Strayhorn, ‘Someone To Watch Over Me’ by George Gershwin, ‘Thriller’ (from Michael Jackson) and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ (from the movie) among others. In addition, a hands-on experience on how to conduct an orchestra was prepared for the audience, and a group of local school bands were also invited to perform together with the professional outfit.
Accordingly, the concert was not only entertaining’, but also educational. The atmosphere among the audience was electrifying and encouraging as they put their hands together in appreciating each and every item performed on stage by the orchestra which enthralled them throughout the concert. The concert was well received by the local audience of 800 people.
