The Joe – Pete soccer enthusiasts will celebrate the Silver Jubilee of the soccer encounter between these two leading schools in Colombo on October 23 at Longdon Place. This year’s game is organized by St. Joseph’s College headed by its Rector Rev. Fr. Travis Gabriel for the Rev. Fr Joe E. Wickramasinghe, (former rector of St. Peter’s) and Rev. Fr. Stanley Abeysekera (former Rector of St. Joseph’s) Challenge Trophies.
The organizers have decided to extend this soccer encounters to the under-13 and under-15 age groups too which are also to be conducted on the same day prior to the first XI game which will classed as the Big Soccer Match for these two schools. In addition there will also be a match between the Old Boys.
St. Peter’s has a better record from the past 24 games having recorded 12 victories against their rival’s 11 wins. The previous matches were played for the Rev. Fr. Stanley Silva Challenge Trophy. The first game was played in 1989. Joes won that game 1/nil. The solitary goal was scored by their vice captain Shehan Daniel in the first half. One game ended in a no decision when the referee stopped the game due to bad weather.
The last five games of this series have been dominated by the Josephians with five successive wins to set a record. The biggest victory in this series stands with the Joes when they thrashed the Peterites 5/1 in 1991. This record breaking team was led by highly talented Jerome Ambrose.
Angelo Perera leads the Peterites in this encounter with Jerome Kausal as his deputy. The Josephian team will be led by Asitha Lakmina Fernando and his deputy is Mayuraka Perera.
With both teams are in peak form and are expected to thrill the soccer loving fans expected to witness this interesting game.
The day’s proceedings will commence with the flag hoisting ceremony at 12.15 p.m. followed by the under-13 game at 12.30 p.m. The under-15 and the Old Boys matches will follow. The main game of the day between the fist XI teams is scheduled to kick off soon after the arrival of the Chief Guest.
The Chief Guest will be the Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo Diocese Rt. Rev. Dr. Maxwell Silva. The chief Guest will present the awards soon after the Big Game.
