United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Puttalam District MP Sanath Nishantha Perera has been remanded in custody till tomorrow (16) after he surrendered to the Chilaw Magistrate’s Court today.

Speaking to The Nation, Police Media Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara stated the MP was remanded in connection with an ongoing court case at the Chilaw Magistrate’s Court. Nishantha is accused of hurling a bomb at a group of police officers in an attempt to kill them in December 1999.

The MP was supposed to have been present in court when the case was heard on September 25. However, he had failed to appear in court on that day, whereupon a warrant had been issued for his arrest. “The MP surrendered to the Chilaw Magistrate’s Court today through his lawyers, where he was remanded in custody till tomorrow,” the Police Spokesman said.
