GALLE: Rangana Herath snapped up two early wickets as West Indies chasing Sri Lanka first innings total of 484 finished on 66 for two wickets at close on the second day of the first Test at the Galle International Stadium.

Herath who came onto bowl the sixth over of the innings sounded the alarm bells for West Indies with his well flighted deliveries. He nearly had Kraigg Brathwaite’s wicket off his third delivery but the batsman survived the lbw appeal at 14 when he challenged the umpire’s decision successfully. However Brathwaite could not make use of that opportunity when he fell lbw to the same bowler five runs later.

Herath also removed Brathwaite’s opening partner Shai Hope for 23 with a classical left-armer’s delivery that pitched on middle stump and to take the off bail.

Darren Bravo (15) and Marlon Samuels (7) survived the next six overs before stumps as West Indies ended the day trailing Sri Lanka by 418 runs.

Sri Lanka’s lower order batting collapsed after tea losing their last seven wickets for 49 runs to be all out for 484. At 425-3 at one stage it looked like Sri Lanka would easily pass the 500-run mark but West Indies came back strongly in the final session to pick up wickets cheaply as the Lankan batting folded up tamely.

The dismissal of Dinesh Chandimal for 151 started the Sri Lanka slide with none of the other latter batsmen making any worthwhile contribution apart from Angelo Mathews’ 48.

Leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo’s three wickets for five runs off 12 balls that instigated the Sri Lankan batting collapse after tea would have pleased Angelo Mathews to how the pitch was playing. It was still a good batting track but Bishoo who bowls with a flat trajectory picked up the wickets of Prasad (13), Herath (0) and Pradeep (0) in that spell to end with figures of four for 143.
