Sa’adi Thawfeeq reporting from Galle
GALLE: Dimuth Karunaratne scored his third Test century and Dinesh Chandimal eased to his ninth Test fifty as they shared an unbroken century partnership to put Sri Lanka on top of day one of the first Test against West Indies at the Galle International Stadium.
The pair came together at 101-2 and were still at the crease when stumps were drawn with Sri Lanka on 250 for two wickets their partnership worth 149 runs off 295 balls.
Left-hander Karunaratne showing great reserves of concentration and discipline batted throughout a hot and humid day to wear out the West Indies bowlers remaining undefeated on 135 having faced 288 balls and hit 10 fours and a six.
Karunaratne reached his hundred in style by on driving leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo over midwicket for six. His was a chanceless display of batting. The nearest West Indies came to getting his wicket was at 83 when they went upstairs for a bat-pad catch off Devendra Bishoo which was negatived after reviews.
Chandimal made use of a dropped chance by Jerome Taylor at mid-on when he was on 11 to carve out a fine half-century off 107 balls inclusive of one six and three fours. He was unbeaten on 72 at the close.
West Indies’ only success came in the first two sessions where they managed to grab a wicket apiece.
Kaushal Silva was out for 17 and Lahiru Thirimanne for 16 – both looking unconvincing in their displays.
