Twelve protestors have been arrested by the Tissamaharama Police for attacking a bus and the Police during a protest in Pallemalla, Tissamaharama today. The protest turned violent today when the Police intervened to let vehicles through at the time.
The protestors who were demanding clean drinking water had blocked off the Hamabantota – Tissamaharama main road leaving several busses travelling from Kataragama to Colombo stranded. “The Police had attempted to let these vehicles through and the protestors had turned violent” a Police source said adding that the protestors had thereafter attacked a bus and had hurled stones and rocks at the police officers.
According to the Police therefore the protestors were dispersed by the Police using minimum force as required. Three Police officers were injured as a result of the clash. However the police noted that the protesters have now been cleared from the area.
