Unless sincere and committed efforts are made to understand issues, they shall remain to grow into cancerous proportions, and that way become major problems going beyond control. They are matters which clearly stand out and also are maladies that can start growing. If measures are taken for temporary relief, without understanding the root causes such would not only cause the waste of valuable time and resources but also would leave behind negative legacies for the future.
Any developments that harass and irritate the people become issues. They may vary in significance, but and shall not have fixed dimensions. Housing is a basic need and the growing population naturally shall definitely have sections which cannot have solutions. When the government cannot solve it ‘shanties’ shall emerge
Any developments that harass and irritate the people become issues. They may vary in significance, but and shall not have fixed dimensions. Housing is a basic need and the growing population naturally shall definitely have sections which cannot have solutions. When the government cannot solve it ‘shanties’ shall emerge and such environments shall be fertile grounds additional issues as such areas become havens for a variety of crimes. When someone from such a background is apprehended by Police for breaking law, ‘A good hearted politicians’ will use his influence to get the person released creating threefold issues. One is the interference with law and the other is another issue and that is the encouragement given to law breakers. The other is the emergence of a weak law enforcer.
Out of all the causes, economic realities are the bases and the ‘wealth’ is the beginning and end of the whole story as the ‘development’ depends on that. An affluent society shall have resources committed to develop human resources. The so-called developed societies have less issues as a very large portion of factors that can cause issues are normally taken care of.
Education is the basis for productivity and that way the level of affluence. Do all the newborns have equal opportunities in a country where ‘school admission’ is a luxury all cannot enjoy, and it becomes a issue. In order to get the ability, some people stoop down to realities like bribing becomes a deciding factor and a requisite that cannot be ignored. It is an ‘issue’ that governs the whole system. Premeditated use of false documents becomes an innocent sounding regular process. Absence of a National Standard is the main cause.
We officially recognize differences in educational institutions and standards. The most hilarious part is the standardization and the so-called ‘scholarship examinations’. If the same standard of education can be provided for all the institutions, do we need various manipulations to curtail numbers? Some years back it would have looked more difficult, but with modern improvements in information technology, what prevents a school in the remotest part in our country in upgrading the teaching and learning skills? What are we really after? Some ‘certificates’ or real knowledge?
The funniest aspect is that an A/L Student in Colombo cannot enter the University with his ‘Z’ score, but another student from a so-called difficult area can. What we do is actually the discounting of the standards. The remedial action to solve an issue becomes the cause for other issues.
Increasing guaranteed prices will make the farmers who grow more comfortable. But they are a smaller percentage compared to consumers. For example, the paddy farmers are about 30 percent. That establishes a base for an issue.70 percent of the people have to pay more for their rice. Then they increase their prices for the produce, products and services. Prices go up everywhere. All of us scream about high cost of living. But think different for a moment. Find ways to reduce costs and when the cost is less do not they make the same margin which was expected through the Guaranteed Prices?
Approaches internally as well as externally, have created unnecessary number of issues.
United Nation’s Resolution could have been avoided if real professionalism was used and the real professionals were allowed to handle matters of global magnitude without allowing ‘court jesters’ to dominate. That issue is a reality. Dominating role played by political Jesters became an issue. The development that sprang up linked created more issues which keep on harassing our country.
The Police service now is faced with the task of getting geared to the real needs of the nation and that cannot be achieved without having a contented force made up of members who can keep their heads high and uphold law without getting intimidated by political goons. When an ordinary policeman cannot live with dignity and if he falls victim to a criminally-inclined businessman who makes such a policeman under obligation, how will such a Law Enforcer react to anti social activities?
Those are just some and a very small representation of the actual picture.
Issues are in thousands and what is important is to have a ‘national level consensus’ so that it shall become the base for the ‘formulation of a national policy’ which would address ‘issues’.
Let the politicians stop competing, but cooperate instead to solve them. That can be done only if ‘Issues’ are given importance. All are important and should be welcome to solve.
