Former Minister and current Matale District United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) MP Janaka Bandara Tennakoon was remanded in custody till October 20 by the Colombo Chief Magistrate today after being arrested in connection with a murder committed in 1999.
The MP was arrested yesterday (6) while warded at a private hospital in Colombo by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). He was arrested as part of a probe into the shooting death of an individual at Dambulgamuwa in Matale on December 14, 1999. After arresting the MP, the CID took measures to notify the Colombo Chief Magistrate of the arrest.
While remanding the suspect till October 20, the magistrate also ordered prisons officials to produce him before the Matale Magistrate’s Court. Tennakoon is currently still at the private hospital in Colombo in the custody of CID officers and will be handed over to prisons officials when they arrive at the hospital to take charge of him, Police Headquarters said in a statement.
