Two individuals who were found guilty of aiding and abetting the LTTE attempt to assassinate former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in 1999 were today sentenced to 300 and 290 years rigorous imprisonment to be served in 30 years.
Accordingly, Chandra Ragupathy and Velayuthan Vardaraja received sentences of 300 years and 290 years respectively.
The incident took place at a final campaign rally of the 1999 Presidential Election. A female suicide bomber blew herself up at the rally, held at the Town Hall premises. The main target; then President Chandrika Kumarathunga managed to survive, but lost the sight of one eye completely and 26 others died.
High Court Judge Padmini Ranawaka convicted the two accused on charges of attempting to assassinate the former president on December 18, 1999 and the third accused, Wasanthi Ragupathy was acquitted of all charges.
