Royal College peddlers showed their mettle at the National School Games 2015 with a championship and a runner-up position in the National Schools Games concluded last weekend. Junior team retained the shield which they won last year and senior team emerged runners-up. Thus Royalists once again showed their strength in table tennis.
Royalists having crowned as unbeaten champions in Western Province last May selected to represent Western Province for all island championship. Royal brushed side many strong teams. In the short history of under-15 championship Royal share the highest number of championships with Vidyartha College, Kandy.
Under-15 team on their way to finals brushed aside J/Annaicoddai RCTM 3-0, Kingswood College Kandy 3-2, Tholangamuwa Dudley Senanayake Vidyalaya 3-1 and in the finals defeated strong Ambalangoda Dharmasoka Vidyalaya 3-1.
In the finals against Dharmasoka College, Royalists played their hearts out. Having shared the first two singles by both teams Helika Adikary played a superb game to beat fancied Tharusha Dulmith 3-1 before Helitha Hendawitharana sealed the shield by beating Lahiru Tharanga in the reverse single. Helika Adikary remained unbeaten in the tournament.
The team consisted Helika Adikary, Helitha Hendawitharana, Pubudu Perera, Kavindu Suranga, Lasen Githmal and Venuk Wijesinghe.
Senior team beat the fancied teams quite convincingly on their way to the finals. They beat Devananda, Ambalangoda 3-0, Dharmaraja College Kandy 3-0 and lost the finals to fancied Vidyartha College Kandy.
The team consisted Senel Ratnayake (Vice Captain), Virunaka Hendahewa, Nimesh Ranchagoda, Rumal Imthikab, Upeksha Gihan, Rasid Aziz.
Abdu Abdul Aziz captained the Royal College Table Tennis team. Ananda Jayalath managed the team as master in charge. The teams were coached by Wajira Wickramasinghe, Chandika Kumara and Kulanaka Hendahewa.
