Training programmes
The playgrounds department of the Municipal Council had a series of sports activities under the leadership of their head Kelum Shanahasiri and G.G. Darmarathne who did a good job in preparation. This programme was in connection with the Local Government week.

It was nice to see there were batting demonstrations being done without a bat and the football demonstration without a football. Who is fooling whom? These two were conducted by two reputed coaches who are not from the Municipal Council. But the other activists like Table Tennis, Carrom, training program was held at the E.L. Senanayake Children’s Library hall in the proper manner.

St. Sylvester’s College, one time king makes of Stubbs Shield boxing, had to be satisfied with second place in the 98th championship. This gave them one gold, two silver and five Bronze medals. St. Sylvester’s College at one time dominated this championship and also produced several top class boxers.

Mahamaya Girls College, a school which dominates girls’ swimming, won the national age group championship with 378 points. This was a 120 points lead from the next in line. The best swimmers in the under-17 went to Uththama Silva and under-20 to Vino Siriwardena.

Sri Lanka Sevens rugby team who are on duty at the Asian rugby sevens series second leg, in Thailand has seven of the top players from the champion Kandy Sports Club team. They are Fazil Marija captain, Srinath Sooriyabandara, Shehan Pathirana, Anurudha Wilwara, Richard Dharmapala, Nigel Ratwatte, and Gayan Weeraratne.

Saman Kothalawela
The famous ruggerite Saman Kothalawela who played for Havelock SC, Navy SC, Police SC, Kandy SC and Sri Lanka will continue his contribution for St. Anthony’s College Kandy as the rugby trainer. He was seen training the ruggerites at the Kandy Sports Club gymnasium at Nittawela.

Kandy Rotary Club president Vinod Mohandas, says all arrangements have been finalized for the annual T.R.R. Rajan memorial six a side cricket tournament which is expected to be played in the coming week at the Asgiriya International Stadium. According to him 35 teams from Rotary and same number of teams from Rotract will be taking part.

Gymnasium up graded
Thanks to the Kandy Sports Club committee headed by Udaya Balasuriya, the gymnasium at Nittawela, which helps every ruggerite in Kandy, let it be club or school, has been uplifted with some modern equipments.

Billiards and Snooker
Billiards and Snooker at one time was at its best. Today though, the game is in the drain, no club is promoting the game. Tables are there but no proper guidance is given. The Billiards and Snooker Controlling body of the country gives a big hand but the officials over here are not active. No tournaments are conducted and some clubs play the game for fun. It is high time the controlling body appoints the right person to handle the sport in Kandy.
