Secretary of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association (SLBA) Major (rtd) Sampath Peiris has written to all affiliates calling them for a Special General Meeting on 3rd October at the Olympic House at 10 a.m.
This meeting has been arranged to make amendments to Section 16 of the constitution to meet the mandatory requirements of the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
To satisfy the second condition set by BWF, that is to conduct an election under the SLBA Constitution without any government interference. The secretary will also summon for a meeting of all SLBA affiliates for an election under the SLBA Constitution of 1977 to be held on 17th October 2015 at 10 am at Olympic House.
Following the changes to the constitution submissions will be made to the National Olympic Committee (NOC) who will scrutinise for conformity to the SLBA Constitution.
Affiliates will have to make submission of documentation to confirm eligibility to vote at the SGM and at the elections by 1st October. Nominations to be submitted for the posts of office bearers as given in the Constitution by 3rd October.
Sampath Peiris also is made to understand that if the procedure is followed the suspension by BWF would be removed by 17th October 2015. This can happen only of there is an unanimous agreement among the affiliates to forego the notice period for the meetings.
Out of the office bearers elected, the BWF only recognises the Secretary Maj. Sampath Peiris as he held this post prior to the takeover of the SLBA by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, states this letter sent by Sampath Peiris.
The NOC has also confirmed that they also recognise Peiris as the last secretary of SLBA.
As Secretary SLBA under Clause 9(a) he is responsible for calling all meetings. Under Clause 7(n) he has been requested by six Affiliates to summon a Special General Meeting to change the SLBA Constitution of 1977.
In the event of any conflict between the provisions of this Constitution and that of the BWF, the BWF Constitution shall prevail.
