The final draft of The Right to Information (RTI) Bill will be handed over to the Attorney General’s Department on October 5, Joint Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister Gayantha Karunatileka told the media today.
Addressing the weekly Cabinet press briefing today, Karunatileka also said that they hope to present the bill to the Cabinet on October 7 for approval and if not it definitely it will be presented to the Cabinet in the following week.
“After the cabinet approval the bill will be gazetted and within two weeks it will be presented to Parliament,” he added.
Karunathilake mentioned that the government took into consideration requests and suggestions presented to them by from various sections of society when compiling the draft of the RTI bill.
The RTI bill was introduced under the 100-Day program of President Maithripala Sirisena which was considered as one of the foremost concerns of the newly elected government. However, the draft bill could not be presented to the last Parliament before it was dissolved.
