Former Sri Lanka cricket umpire M M Mendis has passed away after a brief illness at the age of 69.

Mendis was a first-class cricket umpire for nearly two decades. He was promoted to the Sri Lanka Cricket ‘A’ panel in 1990 and officiated several matches played by visiting teams including matches of the domestic Premier league and limited-over.

Mendis who was affectionately known by his initials as “Mickey Mouse” was a secretary to the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and also served in the Sri Lanka Cricket examination panel.

His funeral takes place at the Mt Lavinia general cemetery on Thursday at 5 pm.
