According to Joint Cabinet Spokesperson Rajitha Senaratne, the Cabinet approved a proposal made by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe to appoint a committee to provide suitable measures in order to prevent the high rise of child abuses in the country.

Addressing the weekly Cabinet press briefing today, he mentioned that the committee comprises five ministers which includes Minister of Law and Oder and Prison Reforms Thilak Marapana who has been appointed Chairman of the committee, Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs Chandrani Bandara, State Minister of Children’s Affairs Wijayakala Maheswaran and State Minister of City Planning and Water Supply Sudarshini Fernandopulle.

Deputy Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils, Karunaratne Paranavitana who was also at the press briefing held today, expressed the fact that it was disappointing to see the way the media,especially the electronic media reported the incident of the rape and murder of Seya Sadewmi of Kotadeniyawa was disappointing.

“Some of the main stream media channels reported this unfortunate incident in a way which clearly violated media guidelines. They were not even aware that they were violating basic ethics of reporting such an incident.” He said.

However Gayantha Karunathilake assured that the government intends to come up with a mechanism soon to provide a successful solution to prevent these types of incidents taking place in future.
